Popular Media That Spoke to My Soul
Updated: Jun 5, 2025
Every once in a while, there is a book, a movie or a show that reflects deeper truths and expands my awareness. In this post, I’d like to talk about some of the things in popular media that opened my eyes and widened my perspective as well as nourished and soothed my soul. It is rare that a book or a TV show can have such a profound effect.
The first of these is The Lord of the Rings movies. I felt a kinship with the elves, they reminded me of a more beautiful, ideal, and harmonious realm of existence, one that felt familiar and tugged at my heart. I didn’t know yet what exactly they reminded me of: the Pleiadians. I remember sitting in front of the TV, stunned and mesmerized by Arwen, with evocative feelings I couldn’t put into words. I only knew the deep and lasting longing. It was my first time seeing something that so strongly reminded me of where I came from.
The second of these is the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy of books. What kept me reading on was just how eye-opening it was for me to learn that there existed a class of people who lived, thought, and acted in such extraordinary ways using power and influence beyond my wildest imagination. It was shocking actually. From buying out every single copy of a newspaper and the entire company too to prevent public tarnishing of a daughter’s reputation to grounding a plane and delaying a flight so that one person aboard could be retained. I know now that this awareness of certain groups of powerful and influential people was paving the way, preparing me for learning about a small minority of humanity committing even more outrageous, heinous, and hidden dark matters.
The third is a Chinese fantasy costume drama called Eternal Love, also known as Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms, with over 50 billion views. I came upon this show right at the start of my spiritual awakening, when I started opening up to the non-physical world and to spiritual matters. I felt a connection to my ancestry while watching the show both on a human level (the Asian cast and listening to the language) and the starseed level (their ethereal dress and style).

The story takes place in various realms or dimensions, with inhabitants the likes of fairy maids, immortal deities, shape-shifting beasts, and tribes of numerous beings. The main characters are tied by fate across multiple lives and the show touches upon reincarnation.
Some of the concepts in this show parallels our spiritual ideas. I believe it is due to this reason that the show had particular appeal to me. For instance, the world introduced in this series has many realms besides the one for humans. It speaks of going to the human realm to face trials and challenges in order to experience, grow and learn. The characters in this world cultivate themselves, increasing their power and magical capabilities, and increasing their social status with it. An average being would incarnate as an animal, for example, and cultivate or evolve themselves up the ranks to become an immortal god(dess). The show even mentions ascension, where an immortal upgrades to a higher level by successfully withstanding a set number of lightning strikes from Heaven, a metaphor for often needing to withstand painful and difficult tribulations during the ascension process. The existence of a higher power and intelligence, whose will and motives are unknowable, orchestrating everyone’s destiny is also spoken of.
It’s refreshing to watch a love story unfold in due time rather than the Hollywood style of romance where they sleep with each other upon meeting. My first time watching had some struggles to it, as it took me some time to get used to the format and style of the show. There is a lot of nuance, subtlety, and things unsaid that are easily missed if not watched carefully. There is some lore and unfamiliar names for places and things. I also found it hard to sympathize with certain antagonists in the show and found their persistence annoying and hard to bear. However, already knowing their nature on the second watch, I found I could accept and even sympathize with them, knowing how it all turns out in the end. I missed a lot on the first watch, and am enjoying my second time through the series. I definitely recommend watching it. The show is available on Netflix (as of this writing) and on YouTube for free, in the original language with English subtitles.
